Overview

Northeast Elitist ("we", "us", "our") is an editorial publication. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. We designed the site to collect as little as possible: there are no advertising trackers, no data brokers, and no sale of personal information — ever.

Information we collect

Account information. When you register, we store your username, email address, and a cryptographically hashed version of your password (we never store or see your plain-text password). Your account also stores your bookmarks and newsletter preference.

Comments and reactions. If you post comments or add reactions to articles, we store that content along with your username so it can be displayed publicly next to your activity.

Newsletter email. If you subscribe to the newsletter — directly or by creating an account (accounts are enrolled by default, and you can opt out at any time in your account settings) — we store your email address and subscription status in order to send you the newsletter.

Session data. To keep you signed in, we use strictly necessary authentication cookies containing short-lived access tokens and a rotating refresh token. These cookies are essential to the service and cannot be used to track you.

Analytics (privacy-friendly)

We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics service. Plausible collects only aggregated, anonymous measurements (such as page views, referrers, and approximate device/browser information). It sets no cookies, collects no personal data, and does not create profiles of individual visitors. Because of this, the site does not require an analytics cookie banner.

How we use your information

We use the information above only to:

  • Operate your account and keep you signed in
  • Display your comments and reactions under your username
  • Sync your bookmarks across sessions
  • Send the newsletter you are subscribed to
  • Send essential account emails (confirmation, password reset)
  • Understand aggregate readership trends to improve the publication

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or sale.

Third-party processors

We share limited data with the following providers, only as needed to run the service:

  • Railway — hosts our application and database, where your account, comments, and bookmarks are stored.
  • Resend — delivers transactional email (account confirmation, password reset) and, if subscribed, the newsletter. Your email address is shared with Resend solely for delivery.
  • Plausible — provides aggregate, anonymous analytics as described above.

Cookies

The site uses only strictly necessary cookies: the authentication cookies that keep you signed in and a small number of security tokens. We set no advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies.

Data retention and deletion

You can delete your account at any time from your account page. Deletion is immediate and permanent: it removes your user record, your comments and replies, your reactions, and your bookmarks. Authentication sessions are revoked.

If you unsubscribe from the newsletter, we retain your email on a suppression list solely to honor your opt-out and ensure you are not re-subscribed. This is a recognized legitimate interest and the industry-standard way to respect unsubscribe requests.

Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction (including under GDPR and CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, export, restrict, or delete your personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. Most of these are available self-service in your account page; for anything else, contact us and we will respond promptly.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will post the updated version here with a new "last updated" date. Material changes will be noted on the site.
